Time management, focus, discipline and being able to finish a project have been very important topics for me, since I've struggled with this so much. I am constantly trying new ways to improve my work output.
I wanted to highlight top articles on the website for these topics.
Here are hand-picked collection of tutorials that will guide you to on the right track to help you finish what you start.
If you read only one blog post from this list, make sure it's this one.
This tutorial came out from my frustration with common and general advice given about time management and productivity. The article is very specific to level designers and game environment artist; it goes into how to set goals and projects, setting timetables and deadlines, working on your projects, planning your projects out, building momentum, checklists, challenges and more.
Challenges are one of the best and fastest ways to improve your work. This article gives you a process to follow in order to set self-imposed challenges for yourself.
I wrote this tutorial couple of months ago after I took a 6+ months hiatus. It quickly became one of the most shared blog posts on the site.
Practice is one of the most important things I try to do on daily basis. I share exactly what practice is and what is not and how to use practice to maximize your own skill as a level designer and environment artist. Can't recommend this article enough.
Setting a montly focus is a very powerful technique that can be used along side of deliberate practice. The idea here is to pick a single topic to focus on for the entire month. This could be low poly modeling, texturing, scripting, gameplay, bsp block-in and so on.
60-60-30 is a productivity technique that I've been since 2009. 60-60-30 stands for time in minutes. The basic idea is to work in 60 minute chunks, twice then take 30 minute break. Then repeat the sequence again. There are a few additional details you'd want to consider.
For the last tutorial I wanted to show you how to plan your game environments and level designs. Once you get a good idea on how you can improve your work with managing your time, focus and productivity, next step is to start planning out your project.
Hope this collection helps you to get the year started off on the right path.
