WoLD Insider Newsletter: Case Study - Improve Environment Architecture Design with These Tips

Category: Newsletters
August 28, 2025

I've been experimenting and analyzing environment design spaces and making them visually better.

Taking flat, uninspired, bland default rooms and transforming them into something more interesting - visually.

I'm using UE5 as an example but these design principles are universal and will apply to any game engine or modeling software.

Let's take this basic, bland environment space for example:

And walk through to some design idea analysis and tips to make it more visually appealing:

Important Note: work-in-progress lights are being used here and the analysis is for architecture geometry only, not lighting or textures.

IMAGE 1: Bland, Default, Just a Start

A simple, long room with concrete walls, a tiled floor and grid-patterned ceiling.

Design Breakdown: The space feels monotonous and uninviting. All due to lack of architecture variation. The straight walls and flat ceiling create a tunnel-like effect, limiting depth and interest.

IMAGE 2: Columns to Break Up Flat Walls

Added vertical columns along the walls to break up the flat walls.

Design Breakdown: The columns add some verticality and break the flat walls, improving spatial definition. However, the design still lacks variation and making it feel generic.

IMAGE 3: Adding Angles to Open Up the Space - Better But Not There Yet

Adding angles to open up the space. It's better but still not there.

Design Breakdown: The angled walls and ceiling add a sense of movement and height, breaking rigid linearity of earlier designs. However, it still lacks of detail and keeps it from feeling complete.

IMAGE 4: Adding Detail, Height Change and Angles - Better

Adding detail, height change and geometry angles. Much better.

Design Breakdown: The height variation and angles significantly improve spatial interest and flow. It feels more dynamic now.

More Improvements and Ideas

This analysis was just for architecture geometry and design. But of course there is a lot more that can be added to improve it. Such as lighting and textures.

Here are few ideas you could introduce:

  • Use columns with different materials (polished stone or metal) or add decorative elements to increase visual interest.
  • Introduce contrasting floor patterns to define zones.
  • Add ambient lighting around the columns to highlight them and create an atmosphere.
  • Integrate skylights or larger windows to bring in natural light and enhance the angular design.
  • Add wall panels or artwork to complement the angles and add character.
  • Use decals to add more storytelling elements to the environment.
  • Use varied lighting intensities to emphasize the angles, creating focal points.
  • Introduce a color palette (warm grays or muted tones) to soften the industrial feel or to emphasize it.
  • Add furniture or props to add functionality.
  • Add more reflective surfaces or glass partitions to add modern design and depth.
