UE4: BSP Blockout Process - Abandoned Building and Terrain from Photo Reference

Category: UE4
October 22, 2019

One of the best ways to master BSP brush creation in UE4 is to do a photo reference to blockout exercise.

I found a photo reference that I wanted to blockout that included an abandoned building and some terrain.

Important Ideas from the Video

  • Begin by establish correct dimensions and scale of the building; get this right
  • Use the UE4 mannequin to judge proportions
  • Pick one section of the building to begin the BSP blockout from
  • Get this first section blockout right (wall height, window and door size); everything will be built and judged to this initial blockout
  • Duplicate existing brushes a lot after the first section is blocked out to expand for the rest of the building
  • Always be looking at the photo reference (I have a second monitor where I was looking at the photo reference the entire time)
  • I added terrain at the end to have a ground plane
  • The final BSP blockout can now be used as a template to export as OBJ or FBX from UE4 and import it into 3d modeling software to create the modular meshes from
