In this series of tutorials we begin to cover CryEngine 3 SDK. If you wanted to learn CryEngine 3 SDK, this is the time to do it.

We will cover everything you need to know to get started with CryEngine 3 SDK and begin creating your own beautiful, realistic environments with one of the industries top game engines.

Lets begin.

In this first tutorial we cover how to download, install and launch CryEngine 3 SDK.

Download the free version of CryEngine 3 SDK here.

 

INSTALL CRYENGINE 3 SDK

To install CryEngine 3 SDK simply extract the zipped download. Once you extracted the zip you have installed CryEngine. There is no .exe file

 

WHERE TO FIND THE GAME AND THE LEVEL EDITOR

Depending on the system you use, open either Bin32 or Bin64 folder. The editor and the game will be in those folders.

Game is Launcher

Level Editor is Editor

You may want to right-click and Send to Desktop for faster launch.

 

REGISTER TO USE CRYENGINE

Before you can use CryEngine 3 SDK you will have to register an account. It is free and you can do so when you launch the game or the editor. You will have to log-in everytime you want to use CryEngine 3 SDK.

 

LAUNCHING THE GAME AND THE EDITOR

Lets launch the game first to see if you can open the example map in game.

Double click on Launcher or shortcut you created.

As of version 1.0 of CryEngine 3 SDK, there are no menus. To launch any map you have to open up the console by hitting the tilde key ~

Then type in: map forest

Example map forest will load and you are ready to walk around the world and explore.

 

Next, lets launch the editor. Double click on the Editor or the shortcut you created.

Log in and CryEngine Sandbox will open.

First thing in the editor go to File --> Open and open forest.cry map. The example map that comes with CryEngine. This will give you the ability to get familiar with CryEngine editor, make sure that your pc can handle the editor and everything is rendering properly.
