Left 4 Dead: Environment Workflow Videos.Three videos expand on the basic two rooms we created in the previous Hammer tutorials.

In the three video tutorials that follow you get to see how we take the two basic rooms and expand it into a full environment with interior spaces and an exterior.

Videos are doubled in speed for time purposes with a voice-over describing what I am doing so you don't miss anything.

Three video tutorials only cover the geometry brushes of interior and exterior environment. Later I cover terrain and skyboxes.

Becoming a Level Designer and Environment Artist

Once you have began on your journey to acquiring artistic skills it is now time to apply what you learned into a 3d digital package and a level editor.

I am going to cover the basics of what level editor to choose, which 2d package to work with, as well as 3d package.

All of these are based on my own experience and my opinion. You may want to try different things out and decide for yourself. It is ultimately up to you which one you choose and become a master at it.

All I can tell you is to pick a few as opposed to many. Become really good at one or two.

Left 4 Dead SKD is Out

The SDK (software development kit) for Left 4 Dead is released open beta.

If you own the game, the SDK mod tools are now available through Steam.

Valve has also released SketchUp Source tools, which allows modders to create content for the Source engine using Google SketchUp.

Becoming a Level Designer and Environment Artist

This article is split into 2 parts.

First one will cover the fundamental artistic skills. In my opinion if you are really serious in becoming a top level designer and environment artist, you must acquire the fundamental artistic skills such as drawing, human anatomy, color, design and composition. These will make you stand apart from others. You will not be just another guy who knows a 3d/level-editing package. You will be able to bring your own creative vision to the table.
